What is rosacea?

Rosacea is a common skin disease, the cause of which is unknown, but rosacea treatment provides a solution to the skin disease. It affects 2-10% of people. Since it most often appears on the face, chin, forehead, and ears, with redness and even acne-like symptoms, it can cause serious psychological problems.

According to a survey by the National Rosacea Society in America, the self-confidence of 70% of the respondents decreased, while 41% became downright withdrawn, and several even lost their jobs due to flare-ups of the disease.

Since we do not know the cause of rosacea, it is not possible to treat the symptoms permanently. Continuous medical monitoring is required. Without treatment, rosacea tends to worsen. That's why it's important to visit a dermatologist at the first symptoms!

What do you need to know about rosacea?

It is primarily a disease of 30-50-year-olds, and women are most often affected. We don't know the real reason, only that it can be influenced by many factors. It occurs more often in people with lighter skin.

It is a chronic skin disease that lasts for years and worsens without treatment, the first symptoms of which are occasional redness on the face, nose, chin, forehead, and ears. Less commonly, rosacea can appear on the neck, chest, hairy scalp and ears. As time progresses, the redness not only appears from time to time, but becomes permanent and visible blood vessels appear in the affected area. Without proper medical treatment, the disease can worsen and acne-like symptoms appear. In severe cases, the nose can also swell and the so-called rhinophyma develops as a result of tissue proliferation. Eye symptoms are also present in many rosacea patients.

What are the symptoms of rosacea?

  • Flushing: Most people with rosacea experience flushing. Redness is temporary. This is most often the first symptom of rosacea.
  • Persistent redness: It is the most common symptom of rosacea. It reminds me of a sunburn, but it doesn't disappear with time.
  • Acne-like symptoms: It is characterized by symptoms reminiscent of tiny red pimples. There are no blackheads. You may experience a burning, itching sensation.
  • Visible blood vessels

Other possible accompanying symptoms of rosacea:

  • Eye irritation: Eye symptoms may occur in 50% of rosacea patients, which may include irritation, redness and tearing. The eyelid may swell and become red. In severe cases, the cornea can also be damaged, which can even lead to blindness without treatment!
  • Burning, stinging sensation: These symptoms can appear mainly on the face, which can be accompanied by itching and a feeling of tightness.
  • Skin dryness
  • Appearance of plaques: Prominent red bdquo;spots', most often on the face.
  • Thickening of the skin: The skin may thicken and tissue growth may develop, especially on the nose. This is called rhinophyma, which can occur mainly in men.
  • Edema: Swelling on the face, known as edema, can accompany other symptoms of rosacea.

What are the types of rosacea?

  • temporary or permanent redness and visible blood vessels (erythematoid-telangiectatic rosacea)
  • permanent redness and temporary acne-like symptoms (papulopustular rosacea)
  • characterized by thickening of the skin. Often the nose becomes enlarged as a result of tissue proliferation (phymatous rosacea)
  • mainly characterized by eye symptoms, such as dry eyes, tearing, burning sensation, swollen eyelids (ocular rosacea)

Many patients are not only characterized by pure types, but a mixture of them is also possible. The individual symptoms are only mild at first, but they can get worse later. Therefore, it is very important that rosacea is diagnosed as soon as possible and treated by a suitable specialist.

Rosacea treatment and treatment types

Because the symptoms are different for rosacea patients, their treatment is also different. We have a number of topical (external, applied to the skin) and oral medications available. As of January 2010, a prescription-only gel that effectively reduces both redness and acne-like symptoms has been available here. Treatment of dilated blood vessels IPL treatment with the help of and possible with a laser.

How to care for rosacea skin?

Skin care is essential in the treatment of rosacea. Discussing this with a dermatologist is very important. Conventional care products can strongly irritate rosacea skin, so only non-irritating skin care and cleaning products should be used. The skin should only be washed with lukewarm water and dried with a thick cotton towel. Do not rub the skin! The results of all medical treatments are improved if we use care products that restore the skin's defense system. These are e.g. preparations containing gluconolactone.

Sun protection is important. Here, it is recommended to use sunscreens that also contain physical sunscreen.

Makeup: it is recommended to use green color correctors, on which to apply the natural yellowish tone foundation. Avoid pink and orange colors!

Is a lifestyle change necessary?

In addition to medical treatment, rosacea patients experience fewer flare-ups if they observe and avoid factors that worsen their symptoms. There are many such factors.
