Ingrown nails are a real annoyance of everyday life. This is an invisible problem for others, but in our own case, we can feel the characteristic, sharp pain associated with it at every step. It affects about 5-25% of the adult population.

What happens when a nail grows, what is an ingrown nail?

The essence of the problem is that a nail edge grows under the nail plate, so it continuously it creases in front of you. As a result of this inflammation occurs, which initially appears as a painful swelling. Over time from under my nails oozing of pus can be observed, which already shows the aggravation of the problem. The complaint can also be associated with bacteria and fungi growing under the nail, which increases the bad situation.

The problem can become very serious: the pain associated with an ingrown toenail can affect our walking, which can even lead to joint problems, but the wound caused by the ingrowth, as a kind of gate, opens the way for various pathogens, bacteria and viruses, which in the worst case can lead to thrush. can also develop.

The underlying cause is almost always the patient bad habits can be traced back to, which is why we ourselves can do the most to prevent ingrown nails.

How does it develop, what is the reason?

The problem of toes is considered almost a national disease, for which several factors can be responsible. One of the most characteristic is incorrect, inadequate nail cutting. If you cut it curved, you absolutely increase the chances of ingrowth, on the other hand, if you cut it in a straight line and gently correct the edges with a nail file, you can minimize the chances of developing complaints.
Tight shoes with excessively narrow heads can also cause ingrown toenails, as the skin next to the fingers compressed by the shoe presses against the edge of the nail, but diabetes or fungus are also predisposing factors. The unpleasant problem can also arise in the event of a physical impact - injury, impact.

How to fight ingrown toenails?

Home practices can help in milder cases. Soaking in warm water, wearing well-ventilated footwear and pushing the nail and the skin underneath with dental floss or an ear cleaning stick can help alleviate acute complaints. Disinfectant creams and anti-inflammatory ointments available in pharmacies without a prescription can also be effective. In the case of early-stage nail growth, relief may be experienced after a few days, but the treatment should be continued for at least 2-3 weeks.
Regarding the treatment of ingrown nails, in more serious cases it is worth seeking medical help.

When is more serious intervention necessary?

Nail bed plastic surgery is a common procedure, mostly used to treat diseases occurring on the big toes. THE laser during consultations before nail surgery, about all the details of the procedure accurate information we give to our patients, including, for example, information about anesthesia, the course of the intervention, what to do after surgery and possible complications.
During the surgical operation - after disinfection and local anesthesia - we remove the edges of the ingrown nail (wedge resection) in a thin strip, in addition to the inflammatory venison. In some more advanced cases, the entire nail or the nail bed can be removed.
Through the laser procedure, the cells responsible for nail production are also removed from the nail bed. The part of the nail prone to ingrowth is practically "destroyed forever" and we can say goodbye to the problem forever.

What complications are possible?

As with any intervention, complications may arise here, although the probability is small.
Inflammation, bleeding, and allergies may occur, which are basically treatable and typical of the period immediately following surgery. Regrowth may occur later, if the removal of the matrix cells was not successful. In this case, the procedure can be repeated.

What to do after the intervention?

The day after this procedure, the resulting bandage must be carefully soaked with chamomile water from the operated area. The treated area should be kept under a lukewarm water shower every morning and evening, then thoroughly dried and disinfected afterwards.
Laser wound healing is different from traditional wound healing, this factor must be taken into account, so don't be afraid! Yellow discharge, which is not pus, should be expected from the wound. The red edge of the wound is also a feature of the laser procedure, so there is no cause for concern.

After about a few days - 4 or 5 - you can walk around without the bandage at home. It is important to take care of the wound and that dirt does not touch it or the nail. Depending on the severity of the condition before surgery, recovery takes 3-5 weeks on average. In order to monitor the regeneration, control examinations are recommended at times agreed with the doctor.
