Botox treatment: Everything you need to know about it

Botox is a cosmetic treatment that has gained huge popularity in recent years due to its ability to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. This is a non-surgical procedure in which small amounts of botulinum toxin, a nerve agent, are injected into certain muscles of the face. This toxin works by blocking the signals that cause muscles to contract, thereby temporarily paralyzing them. As a result, the skin over the muscles becomes smoother and wrinkles and fine lines are reduced. Botox is commonly used to treat wrinkles on the forehead, between the eyebrows and around the eyes. It's a quick and relatively painless procedure that can be done in your healthcare provider's office, and most people can resume their normal activities immediately after treatment. However, like all medical procedures, Botox carries certain risks and possible side effects, so it is important to consult with a qualified and experienced healthcare provider before treatment.

Botox treatment

Contrary to popular belief botox treatment as a result, your muscles don't become paralyzed, the smile doesn't freeze off your face. With appropriate expertise, dosage and timing, it is possible for your muscles to learn to relax, i.e. your constantly tense muscles do not wrinkle your face.

The history and past of botox treatment

Botulinum toxin (aka Botox) was first discovered at the end of the 19th century by Dr. Emile Pierre van Ermengem. In the 1960s, scientists began investigating its medical applications, including treating squint and blepharospasm (uncontrollable blinking). In 2002, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Botox for cosmetic use to treat wrinkles between the eyebrows. Since then, it has become increasingly popular as a non-surgical cosmetic treatment to reduce wrinkles and achieve a more youthful appearance.

How do we use the botox preparation?

The intervention can be performed with a thin injection needle, during the course of pain, which is why it causes significantly less discomfort than the application of most types of wrinkle filling or plastic surgery. During the intervention, a minimal amount of botox is injected at the pre-marked points.

How long does botox last?

The effect of the treatment is not permanent and irreversible. Its effect usually lasts for 4-6 months but this can vary depending on individual factors such as metabolism and muscle activity. Treatments can be performed in just 15 minutes, and results are visible after just 3-7 days. As the effect wears off, muscle contractions gradually return and wrinkles may reappear. Follow-up treatments are recommended to maintain the desired results.

Benefits of botox treatment

Botox treatment has many advantages and benefits, making it a popular choice for individuals looking to treat wrinkles and achieve a more youthful appearance. Some of the benefits of Botox treatment include:
Non-surgical approach: Botox is a non-surgical cosmetic treatment that does not require incisions, anesthesia or lengthy recovery time. It provides an alternative to more invasive procedures such as facelift or eyebrow lift.
  • Minimally invasive: Botox injections use a fine needle, which causes minimal discomfort only during the procedure. Most individuals tolerate the intervention well and experience only mild, temporary side effects.
  • Fast and convenient: Botox treatment can usually be performed in a short time, usually taking 15-20 minutes. This makes it a convenient option for individuals with busy schedules as it is easy to fit into their routine.
  • Noticeable results: Botox can provide visible results in reducing the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. Within a few days to a week of the procedure, individuals may notice smoother, more youthful-looking skin in the treated areas.
  • Targeted approach: Botox injections can be precisely injected into the specific muscles responsible for the formation of wrinkles and fine lines. This allows for personalized solutions that address the individual's unique needs and highlight their natural features.
  • Versatility: In addition to treating facial wrinkles, Botox is approved for a number of conditions, including chronic migraines, excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis), and muscle spasticity. This versatility proves the wide applicability and effectiveness of Botox.
  • Temporary effects: The effects of Botox treatment are temporary, which can be considered an advantage for individuals who prefer a more flexible approach. If a person is not satisfied with the results or wishes to stop the treatment, the effects gradually wear off over time without leaving any lasting changes.
  • High safety profile: Botox has been widely studied and used for both cosmetic and medical purposes for several decades. When used by a trained healthcare professional, the risk of serious complications is minimal. Side effects, if any, are typically mild and temporary.

Areas of Botox treatment: Where can Botox be used?

Here are some areas where Botox can be used:
  • Forehead: Botox injections can help reduce the appearance of frown lines and wrinkles.
  • Eyes: Botox can be used to treat crow's feet, i.e. wrinkles around the eyes.
  • Mouth: Botox injections can reduce the appearance of smile lines and marionette lines around the mouth.
  • Jawline: Botox can be used to slim the jawline by relaxing the muscles in the area.
  • Neck: Botox can be used to reduce the appearance of neck lines and wrinkles.
  • Excessive sweating: Botox can be used to treat excessive sweating of the armpits, hands and feet.
  • Migraines: Botox injections can be used to treat chronic migraines by relaxing the muscles in the head and neck.

Botox treatment

Who is Botox treatment recommended for?

Regardless of gender, the procedure can be used with great safety in people between the ages of 18 and 65. Even before the wrinkles really deepen and the skin breaks, we recommend starting botox treatments. Outstanding results can be achieved with mimicry, a dynamic wrinkles in treatment, i.e. in the case of magpiesin completely smoothing the horizontal wrinkles around the lips, on the forehead and between the eyebrows, the so-called "bunny lines" on both sides of the nose or the folds that radiate an angry mood, lifting the corners of the mouth.

Repeated treatment of the forehead and the areas between the eyebrows is recommended after 4-6 months, the area around the eyes and lips every 3-4 months. If we start the treatment in time, at the beginning of the patient's 30s, the muscles spontaneously tense less and less over time, and intervention is required less and less often. In some cases, it can be completely omitted, because the patient learns to use his facial muscles correctly, the muscles will not be in continuous, too strong movement, there will be no excessive facial expressions, unnecessary wrinkles.

This does not mean that the patient is unable to make facial expressions or express emotions. With competent medical treatment, unnecessary, constantly existing muscle tensions can be resolved with it, while their face preserves its naturalness and youth. In order to achieve the above end result, we recommend that the treatment be performed by a competent specialist. Inexperienced aestheticians can unfortunately cause unwanted side effects, such as drooping eyebrows or an asymmetrical face shape. Unprofessional or excessive application is also responsible for the development of misconceptions. The active ingredient used in small amounts in the right place does not cause changes on the face that many people fear.

What are the possible side effects of the treatment?

After the treatment, skin redness and slight bleeding may occur for a short time at the site of the small needle punctures, which will disappear within a week or two. Immediately after the treatment, slight swelling may occur at the injection site, which will be absorbed within a few hours. However, it is important that the patient does not press on these swellings, as this will massage the injected substance, even in places where we did not want to apply botox.

It is important to point out that, contrary to popular belief, botox cannot cause lasting health damage. Very rarely, a headache can be felt for 1-2 days, or muscle weakness, which disappears spontaneously. The good news is that among the side effects, there are more positive ones, so botox is already used for purposes other than the removal of wrinkles. Excessive sweating can be eliminated with it on the face, palms, soles and armpits. Effective results can also be achieved with it in the treatment of migraine headaches.

Who is not recommended for botox?

We do not recommend the treatment to pregnant or breastfeeding mothers, or to those who are allergic to botox or any of its ingredients. It cannot be used in case of fever or neuromuscular diseases.

What to do after botox treatment?

The treatment is completely painless and there is no recovery time. Lying down and bending forward are not recommended for a few hours after the procedure, so that the botox stays in place, i.e. in the treated area, after the treatment. Activities that cause the skin to heat up, i.e. saunas, use of a solarium, sunbathing and intense exercise, are also not recommended. It is not recommended to use other cosmetic treatments for 5 days after the treatment. Botox treatment can be performed in 15-20 minutes with appropriate specialist care, an intervention that provides spectacular results, is completely risk-free, pain-free and requires no recovery time. Why not try it!?

Summary, conclusion

Botox treatment is a minimally invasive procedure that provides temporary relief from wrinkles and fine lines. When done by a qualified professional, you can achieve natural-looking results and improve your overall appearance. However, it is important to consult with a qualified healthcare provider to determine if Botox treatment is appropriate for your unique needs and to minimize the risk of adverse effects.
