Lymphogranuloma venereum (LGV)

  • lymphogranuloma venereum (LGV) is a venereal disease long forgotten in our country, but widespread in the tropics,
  • in recent years, it has been infecting people more and more often in Hungary and Europe,
  • it occurs most often in men, here it affects the anal (rectal) region,
  • accompanied by bloody, purulent, painful bowel movements in case of anal involvement,
  • if the penis is affected, there will be a wound on the penis and a painful, inflamed lymph node in the groin,
  • treatment is a one-time, 3-week course of oral antibiotics,
  • it must always be treated, otherwise there could be serious, life-threatening complications years later.

LGV, or lymphogranuloma venereum (unfortunately, it does not have a Hungarian name), is long forgotten in our country, but decades ago it was relatively widespread, the so-called classic venereal disease. Although in the Western world, including in our country, the infection has only resurfaced in recent years, it is still one of the most widespread and dangerous sexually transmitted infections in tropical countries. The infection is caused by a pathogen (Chlamydia trachomatis L1-L3 group) similar to the "plain" Chlamydia infection (Chlamydia trachomatis DK group), but due to the unique characteristics of the bacterium, a significantly more serious course is expected. The disease most often occurs in men in Europe and thus also in our country, but it can be expected to be seen in women as well. Temporary or permanent weakening of the immune system, in the case of the latter, e.g. HIV infection can predispose to infection.

Symptoms

In men, it most often affects the anal (rectal) region, where painful inflammation and bloody, purulent stools (proctitis) often occur. In second place is the involvement of the penis and urethra, here genital ulcers and translucent urethral discharge can occur, which is often associated with an enlarged inguinal lymph node.

Diagnostics

PCR (DNA) testing of wound, anal (rectal) or urethral secretions can be performed to diagnose the infection. In case of suspicion, it is very important to rule out the pathology, since, like syphilis, the pathology appears to heal after a while, only to return years later causing serious, even life-threatening complications.

Kezelés

Treatment is relatively simple, with a 3-week course of oral antibiotics, the infection can be permanently eradicated from the body. It is always very important that the patient infected with LGV receives the necessary 3-week course of antibiotics, otherwise serious complications affecting internal organs can be expected over the years, which may even endanger life.
